All of the guardians have hobbies or loves that come before the Mafia and Yamamoto is no different. Aside from Hibari and Ryohei's hobbies his is probably the most promnate. See, Gokudera has Tsuna his music, Ryohei has EXTREME boxing, Hibari has his school, Mukuro has his ambitions, Lambo has cleaning toliets, and of course Yamamoto is known as the baseball nut.

Yamamoto is known around the school for being the star baseball player for Namimori. They never go into too much detail about all the positions he can play but he is an amazing batter. He practices just about everyday at the batting cages. Apparently his batting is much like swordsmanship, so much so that Yamamoto can pick up his sword just as easily as he can his bat. As such Yamamoto doesn't even notice when Reborn gives him a transforming bat-sword. Which he can use so skillfully as a sword. Reborn calls Yamamoto a natural-born hitman for this ability however it is curious. So from this point I will be making up a theory.

Yamamoto's father is a sushi chef with an epic sword style that can take Squalo by suprise even though his muscle memory allows him to dodge just about every other type of attack. Yamamoto plays baseball which his father fully and thouroughly supports... yet he's even more thrilled when Yamamoto finally chooses to take up the sword. So, now I must ask myself could it be that Yamamoto's father wanted him to carry on the style or that he had some prior knowledge that caused him to encourage Yama-chi to learn and take it up? If so does that mean that there is an unexplained backstory.
